The results

As a result of the strategic alignment work that took place, The Duchy of Cornwall has a ‘plan on a page’ which clearly displays the vision, values, and factors critical to the business’s success. The final product, The Duchy of Cornwall plan on a page booklet, is a relatable and inclusive document, which all staff can feel proud of. It now sits on everyone’s desk and is a helpful tool for new recruits, tenant farmers and other stakeholders to explain the Duchy’s direction, focus and behavioural pillars.

We supported The Duchy of Cornwall’s executive team in their strategic review process and the development of a ‘plan on a page’.

More about the brief

The Juniper Co. was asked by Matthew Morris, the Duchy Executive Director for Rural, and a longstanding business friend, to work closely with the executive team at The Duchy of Cornwall. He was looking for a partner to support their strategic review process, with the aim of identifying the company’s vision, values, and strategic objectives, resulting in a strategic ‘plan on a page’.

Our approach

Our approach to the brief included the following steps:

1. Present and explain the process to the executive team, conduct one-on-one interviews to build rapport, walk in their shoes and understand their individual objectives and challenges.

2. Review the Duchy’s ‘North’ and compass – their vision, values and critical success factors, through a series of four-hour facilitated virtual workshops with the extended executive team.

3. Facilitate a series of virtual employee workshops to allow all 160 employees to contribute to creating the organisation’s values. This included establishing and working with a smaller ‘Values Group’ to finalise the values and associated behaviours taken from the exploration process with the wider employee group.

4. Facilitate a process to review and agree on final critical success factors and strategic objectives, so they could be cascaded to team and individual objectives, in addition to KPIs and departmental budgets.

5. Assist in ratifying KPIs and updating the executive decision matrix once the plan on a page was complete.

6. Support the creation of marketing collateral, working with an internal project manager and external agency to visualise the vision and values of the company.

In conversation with Matthew Morris - A Juniper podcast

Juniper Co. Managing Director Nicki Kavanagh catches up with Matthew Morris, Executive Director for Rural at The duchy of Cornwall, as well as a longstanding business friend of The Juniper Co.

Matthew Morris is a longstanding business friend, with whom we worked on the Bolesworth Estate strategic plan a few years ago, along with Nina Barbour and the executive team.

“I have worked with Nicki and the team at Juniper for several years now and have seen the difference that they can bring to a team. The work we have done with Juniper on establishing a vision and working out what is important has brought not only the executive team together but also the whole organisation.

Nicki brings a quiet and infectious determination to the process, and her team has made the process of change a smooth one”.
